The BFI London screening is preceded by the world premiere taking place at the prestigious 41st Toronto International Film Festival® (TIFF) on the 11^th September. This is the first Nollywood film to be chosen by both Toronto and London film festivals back to back and is a new milestone in African cinema. A story of love, honour and bullets set in Ibadan, Nigeria; the film is inspired by real life event in 1976 that led to the assassination ofnthe then Nigerian Head of State, Murtala Muhammed.

The film, cast and crew have now received a major boost with a high profile endorsement from the Head of State who succeeded the assassinated Murtala Muhammed at the time; His Excellency General Olusegun Obasanjo, then later went on to become a two term President making him both a military and civilian leader of the largest black nation in the world. He described '76 as, "the best view of one of the worst times in our nation’s history. A must watch and an insight that was long overdue. Watching the attention to detail and hearing my own voice in February 1976, brought out both sweet and sour memories as Murtala Muhammed was not only my boss, he was my friend. I cannot attest to what went on in the homes as we were focused on the field, but this film gives even I, an insight into that."

Set during the era of military assassinations and political unrest in Nigeria, the movie also had the full approval and endorsement of the Nigerian Army and the Murtala Muhammed family, and was shot inside the confines of a military base, another first in Nigeria's cinematic history.  It comes 40 years after the actual events, and follows four years of work by the multi award winning Director Izu Ojukwu and the production teams of Adonis Production and Princewill’s Trust, a brainchild of Prince Tonye Princewill and Adonijah Owiriwa who are the film’s executive producers. Africa Magic, a Multichoice subsidiary also signed on as partners.

WhatsApp to start sharing user data with Facebook

After WhatsApp was bought by Facebook in 2014, users worried that the messaging app's strong stance on privacy might be compromised. Co-founder Jan Koum hoped to stem these fears, writing in a blog post at the time: "Respect for your privacy is coded into our DNA, and we built WhatsApp around the goal of knowing as little about you as possible." Today, though, the company is loosening some of its own restrictions, and has announced it will begin sharing a limited amount of user data — including individuals' phone numbers — with parent company Facebook.

WhatsApp says that sharing this information means Facebook can offer better friend suggestions by mapping users' social connections across the two services, and deliver more relevant ads on the social network. Additional analytics data from WhatsApp will also be shared to track usage metrics and fight spam.

The messaging app says it also wants to explore how businesses can use WhatsApp to contact customers. It gives the example of a bank warning a user about a potentially fraudulent transaction, or notifications from airlines about delayed flights, and says that in order to test the features it needs to update its privacy policy. Facebook has already been exploring these sorts of use-cases with Messenger, and WhatsApp suggested it would follow the same path earlier this year. WhatsApp says that users will be able to "manage these communications," and that this won't lead to third-party banner ads on the service.

Despite these assurances, WhatsApp's users are still likely to feel annoyed that the company is sharing information with Facebook. Part of the app's popularity has always come from its unobtrusive (and unprofitable) business model, which gives users an easy way to communicate without using their data to serve ads. 

WhatsApp's commitment to user privacy has even brought it into conflict with law enforcement, with a Brazilian court temporarily banning the app in July for refusing to hand over messages (it argued it couldn't if it wanted to).

WhatsApp is keen to preempt criticism, and says that although it's changing its privacy policy, it continues to support end-to-end encryption. "Even as we coordinate more with Facebook in the months ahead, your encrypted messages stay private and no one else can read them," says the company in a blog post.

 "Not WhatsApp, not Facebook, nor anyone else. We won’t post or share your WhatsApp number with others, including on Facebook, and we still won't sell, share, or give your phone number to advertisers."

Obasanjo Reflects on 1976 Coup, Says Everyone Thought It will End Nigeria ( Thisday Online)

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, monday reflected on the 1976 coup, saying that Nigerians thought it would end the nation called Nigeria.

Obasanjo explained that the misconception stemmed from the fact that most of those involved in the coup were Christians and for killing the Head of State, who was a Muslim, were seen as a bad signal for Nigeria.

The former president who was a host in the cast and crew of the yet-to-be released film, ‘1976’ (‘76) at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, said there were misconceptions about the coup, which upturned the political situation at the that time.

According to Obasanjo, the killing of a Muslim on a Friday by a gang thought to be Christians, particularly when we remembered the first coup, which upturned the political situation gave a bad signal. Where what will amount to; where will it lead us to and where will it lead us out? These were what Nigerians had in mind.

While describing the film which abridged parts were shown as “a mixture of sweet and sorrow”, Obasanjo commended the team for the production.

He said: “It will make us to remind ourselves not to go back to the dark days, which put us in go-no-go situation.”

He added: “We can have more of this, as there are more national issues that can be portrayed. We are capable of the best and that is what this film has shown,” he said.
However, the Executive Producer of the film, Prince Tonye Princewill, said the cast and crew of ‘1976’ were on tour of the country to seek support and endorsement for the film, billed to premier in November.

“The youth of today need to have a sense of the past, hence the resolve to have the film 1976, which is simply called ‘76”, he said.

Princewill said the visit to Obasanjo was important, “considering his position at that time in the country. We deemed it fit to come and show him the film and curry his endorsement, which as you can see we have got,” he said.

Why Nigerian Army Desires Partnership with Nollywood

 

The Nigerian movie industry awaits the premiere of a game-changing film rooted in the events of the botched 1976 coup. One of the most arduous tasks in the production of the movie, according to its executive director , Prince Tonye Princewill, was the effort to secure a working relationship with the Nigerian Army.

Meticulously executed, the pre-production period took two years including eight months of trying to secure all necessary permission from the Nigerian Army and seven months of shooting. The script was scrutinised and an officer appointed to supervise and monitor each step of the filming process, from beginning to the end.

The movie survived three chiefs of Army Staff. Fortunately, each one of them  took over sustained interests in the film. Determined to make it work, the production crew and cast patiently followed every instruction and met every demand from the military authorities.
A letter from the Headquarters, Nigeria Army, Department of Civil- Military Affairs signed by Major General R. I. Nicholas for the Chief of Army Staff disclosed why the military institution desires a collaboration with the creative industry. “This is in furtherance to a need to build a collaborative relationship between the Nigeria Army and the  movie industry. We believe that the movie will assist in shaping the current effort at improving the civil-military relations and also educate our people on some of the historic values of the Nigeria Army.”

A large part of the action was shot at the Mokola Barracks in Ibadan, Oyo State. As the 200-member cast and crew stayed together for about seven months, bonding as a family was inevitable. Some of the striking human interest events that happened in the course of production were birthdays, weddings and passages. Chidi Mokeme and Debo Oguns, literarily got married on set (they just excused themselves for the weekened of their marriage and came right back to work, after the cremony).

 

Princewill thinks ’76 is watershed of sorts in Nollywood, being the first time the Nigerian Army would encourage that level of involvement in a movie that comments on military history and an epoch in the Nigerian Army. Having opened the door, he is sure the imagination of other movie makers would be fired to follow the precedence of ’76.
’76 followed a painstaking process uncommon in Nollywood. “It took seven years to make this movie. We were not in a hurry at all. We avoided all the errors possible because we set our mind on a global audience from the first day. For close to one year, we were pursuing approval from the authorities of the Nigerian Army. The movie was shot at Mokola Barracks in Ibadan and the story of how the actors were made to fit into the environment should be reserved for another day.

“At the end of the day, some of them had become so used to the character set in 1976 that it was difficult to bring them back to the present. Set designer, Pat Nebo, who also acted in the film did a marvelous job on set. You can see a One Naira note without it being copiously displayed. The table utensils, the walls, the cars were all set in 1976. This was not easy to achieve, but we did not settle for a substitute. For instance, it was difficult to get a 1976 Black Maria, but we persevered and finally we were able to get it.”
The big budget movie which costs about N100 million promises to earn more accollades for Izu Ojukwu as director. The award-winning director is known for his work in flicks like ‘Mirror Boy’ and ‘Last Flight to Abuja’.

’76 features layers of sub-themes revolving on hope, honesty, trust and undying commitment which run like strong under-currents to highlight the tragic end of the main characters. ’76 is a love story that challenges the myopia of ethnicity and bigotry. It brings to the fore the suffering and tenacity of the average Nigerian woman-mother and wife.
This is one movie, Princewill bets, that will generate different emotions not only because it is based on reality, but also for its careful combination of acted scenes with real life footage and archival material.

“At the end of the movie when the coupists were about to be executed at the Bar Beach in Lagos, we moved from a shot scene to a real life scene of when they are being executed. These were some of the tweaks done to give it more authenticity. We actually showed them being executed. We linked a shot scene that was acted to what actually happened. We delivered a smooth transition.”

’76 is the story of a young officer from the Middle Belt who gets into a romantic relationship with an O-level student from the South-eastern region. However, their relationship is strained by constant military postings. The soldier gets accused of being involved in the 1976 unsuccessful military coup and assassination of Nigeria’s late Head of State General Murtala Mohammed; and the heavily.

Ramsey Nouah has also enjoyed corporate deals as well as the media spotlight from international platforms. Other than the aforementioned corporate deals, their exploits also spread into Nollywood as they re-launched their acting careers following the “break” with major, best-selling movie appearances.

But things could have played out a different way if this were the American movie industry. These “bigwig” actors could easily have lost the plot in a more severely competitive industry. Taylor Lautner is a good example of an actor once tipped to become the next big name in Hollywood, but who failed to fully realise the great career predicted for him. But what exactly was the issue? Why did Lautner lose his hold on the American movie industry? The answers are clear.

The 24-year-old first came to mainstream prominence playing Jacob Black in The Twilight Saga TV series but years after the franchise ended the young man is still struggling to attain that household-name status.

The Twilight Saga, a movie series, started airing on November 21, 2008, and its last edition was released on November 16, 2012. Insiders say Twilight was such a huge success it was “not easy [moving] out of the shadow of a hit like [it]”. But the greater truth lies in the fact that Lautner tried to become a successful actor in other projects for two reasons.

First, the movies did not do well in terms of sales and box office numbers, with some of them even failing to break even despite huge budgets.
Secondly, Lautner was asking for too much at the time coupled with his not-so-successful movies. For his 2011 role in Abduction, he charged the producers $5 million and at the end of the day the movie managed a measly $28 million in the US after gulping a $35 million budget.

After the miserable returns from Abduction, the actor demanded $7.5 million for Stretch Armstrong and $10 million for David and Goliath but he would get none of those parts in the end: the films were put on hold indefinitely by the producers. Lautner was also widely regarded as being an inferior actor vis-à-vis the demands he made at the time. Movie critics were critical and described him as “awkward” and “[looking] like a stranger in his own performance.”

Following the more frequent bombings by militant group, Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) President Muhammadu Buhari met with his predecessor, Goodluck Jonathan, on Thursday night at the presidential villa. 

 Details of the meeting is however unknown as at press time as Mr Jonathan just returned to the country on Wednesday, June 1 after a long trip abroad during. While away, it was reported that Mr Jonathan had gone on self-exile, a report he denied. 

Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had received the former president Olusegun Obasanjo in Aso Rock villa on Jume 3, Friday.

Thugs disrupt pro, anti-Aregbesola rallies in Osogbo

 

 

Two separate rallies for and against the Rauf Aregbesola administration were on Tuesday disrupted by hoodlums in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, resulting in many sustaining varying degrees of injuries.
A coalition of civil societies organization had staged a peaceful rally to call for the impeachment of the governor for allegedly mismanaging the state’s resources which brought untold hardship to the people of Osun State.
The coalition, under the aegis of Civil Societies Coalition for Emancipation of Osun State, CSCEO, were marching at the Igbonna Market along the Obafemi Awolowo Way when the hoodlums came attacking with dangerous weapons such as machetes, guns, knives and charms.
There were sporadic shots in the air and many of the protesters scampered for safety.
In the process, many of the protesters, especially pensioners, suffered injuries from the attack.
However, there was a curious twist in the rally episode, when the same set of hoodlums also attacked a pro-Aregbesola rally also in the state capital.
From Aiyetoro area of the state capital to Old Garage Area, Olaiya and Okefia Roundabout, the pro-Aregbesola campaigners carried different placards with different inscriptions such as “Don’t stigmatise Aregbesola over unpaid salaries”, “Osun is not the only state owing workers”, “Omisore, PDP funding violence against Aregbesola’s government”, “Salary issue is a national challenge” and many others.
It was gathered that the hoodlums, thinking that the rally was a regroup of the earlier disrupted rally, descended on the protesters, who also ran for safety.
