Do you know that the gap between the rich and the poor existed as far back as the times of Jesus christ? Christ was in fact quoted as saying, 'it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God? Do you know that several creative minds in modern and ancient times, suffered from mental illness and actually commited suicide? dO YOU KNOW THAT Sigmund freud the father of psychoanalysis considered religion to be a universal obsessional nueroses? 7. The notion of the human curiosity has a history at least as long as colonialism. For instance, in the Western Hemisphere, one of the earliest-known zoos, that of Moctezuma in Mexico, consisted not only of a vast collection of animals, but also exhibited humans, for example, dwarves, albinos and hunchbacks.

  8. During the Renaissance, the Medici developed a large menagerie in the Vatican. In the 16th century, Cardinal Hippolytus Medici had a collection of people of different races as well as exotic animals. He is reported as having a troupe of so-called Savages, speaking over twenty languages; there were also Moors, Tartars, Indians, Turks and Africans

  9. One of the first modern public human exhibitions was P.T. Barnum's exhibition of Joice Heth on February 25, 1835[3] and, subsequently, the Siamese twins Chang and Eng Bunker. These exhibitions were common in freak shows. Columbus brought indigenous Americans from his voyages in the New World to the Spanish court in 1493.[4] Another famous example was that of Saartjie Baartman of the Namaqua, often referred to as the Hottentot Venus, who was displayed in London and France until her death in 1815.

During the 1850s, Maximo and Bartola, two microcephalic children from El Salvador, were exhibited in the US and Europe under the names Aztec Children and Aztec Lilliputians.[5] However, human zoos would become common only in the 1870s in the midst of the New Imperialism period.

  10. In the 1870s, exhibitions of exotic populations became popular in various countries. Human zoos could be found in Paris, Hamburg, Antwerp, Barcelona, London, Milan, New York City, and Hagenbeck, a merchant in wild animals and future entrepreneur of many European zoos, decided in 1874 to exhibit Samoan and Sami people as "purely natural" populations. In 1876, he sent a collaborator to the Egyptian Sudan to bring back some wild beasts and Nubians. The Nubian exhibit was very successful in Europe and toured Paris, London, and Berlin. In 1880, he also dispatched an agent to Labrador to secure a number of Esquimaux (Eskimo / Inuit) from the moravian mission of Hebron; these Inuit were exhibited in his Hamburg Tierpark.

Geoffroy de Saint-Hilaire, director of the Jardin d'acclimatation, decided in 1877 to organize two ethnological spectacles that presented Nubians and Inuit. That year, the audience of the Jardin d'acclimatation' doubled to one million. Between 1877 and 1912, approximately thirty ethnological exhibitions were presented at the Jardin zoologique d'acclimatation.

  11. Both the 1878 and the 1889 Parisian World's Fair presented a Negro Village (village nègre). Visited by 28 million people, the 1889 World's Fair displayed 400 indigenous people as the major attraction. The 1900 World's Fair presented the famous diorama living in Madagascar, while the Colonial Exhibitions in Marseilles (1906 and 1922) and in Paris (1907 and 1931) also displayed humans in cages, often nude or semi-nude.[7] The 1931 exhibition in Paris was so successful that 34 million people attended it in six months, while a smaller counter-exhibition entitled The Truth on the Colonies, organized by the Communist Party, attracted very few visitors—in the first room, it recalled Albert Londres and André Gide's critiques of forced labour in the colonies. Nomadic Senegalese Villages were also presented.

You, your neighbors, and the community can also take steps to reduce mosquitoes in and around your home and in your neighborhood.

  15. Mosquitoes that spread Zika virus also spread dengue and chikungunya viruses.
Zika can be passed through sex from a person who has Zika to his or her sex partners. Condoms (and other barriers to protect against infection) can reduce the chance of getting Zika from sex.
The Florida Department of Health has identified an area in one neighborhood of Miami where Zika is being spread by mosquitoes

A pregnant woman already infected with Zika virus can pass the virus to her fetus during the pregnancy or around the time of birth.

  17. Applying insect repellent is not complicated, but before you do, be sure to read the label for any warnings and to see the active ingredients. All insect repellents, including products combined with sunscreen, should be used according to instructions on the label.

Insect repellents can be used in all ages unless the label specifically states an age limitation or precaution. As long as you read and follow label directions and take proper precautions, insect repellents with active ingredients registered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) do not present health or safety concerns.

FDA recommends using products that contain active ingredients registered by EPA for use on skin and clothing. EPA registration of insect repellent active ingredients indicates the materials have been reviewed and approved for human safety and effectiveness when applied according to instructions on the label.

The active ingredients DEET and picaridin are conventional man-made, chemical repellents according to EPA. Oil of lemon eucalyptus, oil of citronella and IR3535 are repellents made from natural materials such as plants, bacteria, and certain minerals. http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/EmergencyPreparedness/ucm085277.htm

  20. Religion is institutionalized spirituality. Thus there are several religions, having different set of beliefs, traditions and doctrines. They have different types of community based worship programs. It is possible that religions can lose their spirituality when they become institutions of oppression instead of goodwill, peace and harmony. They can become divisive instead of unifying. History will tell us this had happened from time to time.
It has been said that more blood has been shed in the cause of religion than any other cause. The medieval holy wars of Europe; the religion-based terrorism and conflicts of modern times are examples. We must remember that the institutions of religion are supposed to help us practice spirituality in our lives. They need periodic revivals to put spirituality in place.

That is the question posed by architect Alison Brooks' "The Smile," currently on display at the Chelsea College of Art and Design as part of this year's London Design Festival.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Constructed out of tulipwood, "The Smile" is a 34-meter long, 3.5-meter high (111.5 feet by 11.5 feet) rectangular tube that curves at both ends into a huge Cheshire cat grin. Viewers can wander through the hollowed interior, while holes in the walls cast light patterns across the floor.
It is the most complex structure ever to be made out of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and, as such, it is one of the most exciting installations at the UK's largest design festival.

"It's going to open up a whole new world of possibility," says Brooks. "It reveals the possibility of buildings being completely fabricated in wood."

  46. The last West African Ebola epidemic highlights a recurring trend in the zoonotic emergence of virulent pathogens likely to come from bat reservoirs that has caused epidemiologists to ask ‘Are bats special reservoirs for emerging zoonotic pathogens?’ We collate evidence from the past decade to delineate mitochondrial mechanisms of bat physiology that have evolved to mitigate oxidative stress incurred during metabolically costly activities such as flight. We further describe how such mechanisms might have generated pleiotropic effects responsible for tumor mitigation and pathogen control in bat hosts. These synergisms may enable ‘special’ tolerance of intracellular pathogens in bat hosts; paradoxically, this may leave them more susceptible to immunopathological morbidity when attempting to clear extracellular infections such as ‘white-nose syndrome’ (WNS).

  52. (CNN)An employee at a Canadian government-run infectious disease lab may have been exposed to Ebola, health officials said Tuesday.
The incident occurred Monday at a level 4 containment lab at the National Centre for Foreign Animal Disease, which is part of the Canadian Science Center for Human and Animal Health in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The individual was working with pigs that had been infected with the deadly virus for research purposes. Researchers are trying to understand the immune reaction to the virus in pigs.

  53. The American political-media establishment does not understand the depth of anger in its own country.

That is one of the most significant lessons of the 2016 presidential election, in which Donald Trump overcame the doubts of a majority of reporters, pollsters and political scientists who believed Hillary Clinton was headed for a decisive victory.

Instead, white rural voters turned out in numbers that few so-called political experts expected, delivering that decisive victory to Trump.

"It's a debacle on the order of Dewey defeats Truman," Larry Sabato, the University of Virginia political scientist, told CNNMoney, referring to the famously incorrect headline that followed the 1948 presidential election.
How politicians, pollsters and media missed Trump's groundswell
The failure of pollsters, politicians and media to recognize the Trump groundswell was on the level of Dewey defeats Truman.

The patients enrolled in this Phase II trial are adults with relapsed or refractory B cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, according to the biopharmaceutical company's website.
"We took this action after two additional patients in this trial experienced cerebral edema earlier this week," Juno CEO Hans Bishop said on a conference call this morning. One patient died Tuesday, and another died earlier Wednesday.

  55. CNN)Sudan's ecosystems and natural resources are deteriorating.
Temperatures are rising, water supplies are scarce, soil fertility is low and severe droughts are common. After years of desertification, its rich biodiversity is under threat and drought has hindered the fight against hunger.
This burden is affecting not only the country's food security and sustainable development, but also the homes of many Sudanese families.

Dust storms -- known locally as "Haboob" -- have also increased in this region. Moving like a gigantic thick wall, it carries sand and dust -- burying homes, increasing evaporation to a region that's struggling to preserve water supplies, as well as eroding valuable fertile soil.
Experts say that without quick intervention, parts of the African country -- one of the most vulnerable in the world -- could become uninhabitable as a result of climate change.

  57. The ultimate luxury? Why 2016 was the year of the colored diamond ; (CNN)Relatively small, but slowly and perfectly formed over billions of years, the Argyle Violet diamond is so rare in color that it has its own unique diamond classification: "Fancy Deep Grayish Blueish Violet."
It was "a once in a lifetime discovery. I fell in love with it. We had to have it," says Scott West of L.J. West Diamonds Inc. of New York.
Like his father, Larry, and his grandfather Max before him, West is a diamond hunter, searching for the rarest and most unusually colored stones.
His most recent acquisition, the 2.83-carat oval Argyle Violet is being displayed as part of "Diamonds: Rare Brilliance" at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County.

  60. "[T]he tropics really are the richest regions in terms of biodiversity at all levels… On the contrary, we found very low levels of genetic diversity for amphibians in Western Europe," Nogués-Bravo said in a statement. "This suggests that the region's long history of human presence and heavy alteration of nature has taken its toll on genetic diversity. This leaves species in Europe and similar areas also altered by humans extra vulnerable to environmental change because low genetic diversity entails a higher risk of becoming extinct."
