LocalBitcoins Trader Pleads Guilty to Money Transmitter Charge

A Michigan LocalBitcoins trader plead guilty last week to operating an unlicensed money services business.

Federal prosecutors alleged that Sal Mansy, a resident of Detroit, advertising a bitcoin buying and selling service through LocalBitcoins, conducting $2,400,000 worth of business between August 2013 and July 2015.

According to court documents, undercover agents engaged in two trades between December 2014 and March 2015 with Mansy, for an amount totaling roughly 6.32 BTC – an amount worth a total of just under $1,900 at then-current prices.

Mansy is the second user of LocalBitcoins to plead guilty to the unlicensed money service charge this month. Missouri resident Jason Klein plead guilty to selling bitcoin to undercover agents on five separate occasions, and a seller from Rochester, New York named Richard Petix plead guilty to the same charge a week prior.

Court documents detail how Mansy would purchase bitcoin through digital currency exchanges Coinbase and Bitstamp, later selling the digital currency on LocalBitcoins and depositing the proceeds into bank accounts connected to a company he operated, TV TOYZ, which was also named in the government’s lawsuit.

Coinbase, according to a prosecutorial filing from 15th May of this year, closed Mansy’s account in June 2014 after questioning him about the nature of his account. Communications between Mansy and support staff for Coinbase and Bitstamp were included in that document, showing how both exchanges raised questions about Mansy’s bitcoin purchases and whether he had registered with the US Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) as a money transmitter.

The prosecutorial document shows that Mansy argued, in discussions with the US Department of Homeland Security, that he wasn’t operating a money transmission business.
"According to Mansy, he had looked up the money service business requirements on the Department of the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) website and determined that his business model did not apply to that of a money service business," the filing stated.

Mansy faces as many as five years in prison and $250,000 in fines at sentencing later this year.

Bitcoin for Businesses - An Overview

Bitcoin for Businesses

Bitcoin is a very secure and inexpensive way to handle payments.

IconChoose your own fees

There is no fee to receive bitcoins, and many wallets let you control how large a fee to pay when spending. Most wallets have reasonable default fees, and higher fees can encourage faster confirmation of your transactions. Fees are unrelated to the amount transferred, so it's possible to send 100,000 bitcoins for the same fee it costs to send 1 bitcoin.

IconProtection against fraud

Any business that accepts credit cards or PayPal knows the problem of payments that are later reversed. Chargeback frauds result in limited market reach and increased prices, which in turn penalizes customers. Bitcoin payments are irreversible and secure, meaning that the cost of fraud is no longer pushed onto the shoulders of the merchants.

IconFast international payments

Sending bitcoins across borders is as easy as sending them across the street. There are no banks to make you wait three business days, no extra fees for making an international transfer, and no special limitations on the minimum or maximum amount you can send.

IconNo PCI compliance required

Accepting credit cards online typically requires extensive security checks in order to comply with the PCI standard. Bitcoin still requires you to secure your wallet and your payment requests. However, you do not carry the costs and responsibilities that come with processing sensitive information from your customers like credit card numbers.

IconGet some free visibility

Bitcoin is an emerging market of new customers who are searching for ways to spend their bitcoins. Accepting them is a good way to get new customers and give your business some new visibility. Accepting a new payment method has often shown to be a clever practice for online businesses.

IconMulti-signature

Bitcoin also includes a multi-signature feature which allows bitcoins to be spent only if a subset of a group of people authorize the transaction. This can be used by a board of directors to prevent any member to make expenditures without enough consent from other members, as well as to track which members allowed each payment.

IconAccounting transparency

Many organizations are required to produce accounting documents about their activity. Using Bitcoin allows you to offer the highest level of transparency since you can provide information your members can use to verify your balances and transactions. Non-profit organizations can also allow the public to see how much they receive in donations.

Bitcoin is the simplest way to exchange money at very low cost.

Bitcoin for Individuals

Bitcoin is the simplest way to exchange money at very low cost.

IconMobile payments made easy

Bitcoin on mobiles allows you to pay with a simple two step scan-and-pay. No need to sign up, swipe your card, type a PIN, or sign anything. All you need to receive Bitcoin payments is to display the QR code in your Bitcoin wallet app and let your friend scan your mobile, or touch the two phones together (using NFC radio technology).

IconSecurity and control over your money

Bitcoin transactions are secured by military grade cryptography. Nobody can charge you money or make a payment on your behalf. So long as you take the required steps to protect your wallet, Bitcoin can give you control over your money and a strong level of protection against many types of fraud.

IconWorks everywhere, anytime

Just like with email, you don't need to ask your family to use the same software or the same service providers. Just let them stick to their own favorites. No problem there; they are all compatible as they use the same open technology. The Bitcoin network never sleeps, even on holidays!

IconFast international payments

Sending bitcoins across borders is as easy as sending them across the street. There are no banks to make you wait three business days, no extra fees for making an international transfer, and no special limitations on the minimum or maximum amount you can send.

IconProtect your identity

With Bitcoin, there is no credit card number that some malicious actor can collect in order to impersonate you. In fact, it is even possible to send a payment without revealing your identity, almost like with physical money. You should however take note that some effort can be required to protect your privacy.

Fire guts Lagos annex of National Assembly...Jibrn, Dogara feared burnt?

THE National Assembly, Lagos Annex, located Tafawa Balewa Square, in Lagos Central Business District, CBD, was yesterday gutted by fire, destroying properties worth millions of Naira. Vanguard gathered that the fire started from the fourth floor of the 8-storey building.

It was learned that the partitioning of the structure that housed Second Republic lawmakers affected efforts of the state’s fire fighting officials assisted by Julius Berger Plc, in putting out the fire immediately. Sources said occupants of the building were still in their offices when the fire started.

A fire official disclosed to Vanguard that “it is difficult fighting fire in the building. In fact, due to the enormity of the fire, as some of the glasses had started falling.” Mr. Michael Adewale, a trader, said: “We saw thick smoke coming out from the building and suspected that it was fire outbreak. So we called emergency numbers.”

Five hours after the inferno, officials of the state fire service were still battling to put out the fire. Confirming the incident, Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Mr. Rasak Fadipe, last night said: “We are yet to put out the fire completely. “When we arrived, we discovered that the building was a glass house and the fire was well alight.

Three floors were heavily engulfed by smoke and we had challenges gaining access to the building. “The building was heavily burglar-proof, so we had that challenge, too. But at the end of the day, we were able to cut the burglar proof, although many of our firemen sustained injuries.”

Fadipe said he had deployed four fire trucks with aerial ladder to the scene from Ilupeju, Alausa and Sari-Iganmu fire stations.

‘76’ , Marks Major International European Showcase at The BFI London Film Festival

A Story of Love, Honour and Bullets

Watch the new official trailer here :    https://youtu.be/XSMsJUSusf8

Lagos, NigeriaSeptember 1, 2016
------------------------------------------------------------
‘76’ Inspired by true events, set in 1976, six years after the end of the civil war in Nigeria, sees the heavily pregnant woman’s life crumbles when the news of her husband’s involvement in a botched military coup attempt hits the headlines. ‘76’ celebrates the quality of the true African woman by exploring the usually invisible pain of a soldier’s wife; it highlights the enduring Nigerian cultural values of courage, resilience, patience, loyalty, faith and family. It is visually ground breaking, emotionally engaging and amorously therapeutic.

The 3 million dollar landmark cinematic production ‘76’ is all shot in Nigeria by award-winning director, Izu Ojukwu starring Nigerian Nollywood megastars, Rita Dominic, Ramsey Nouah, Chidi Mokeme, Ibinabo Fiberesinma and Memry Savanhu. Also starring in the movie is actor Daniel K Daniel who recently won the best actor award at the 2016 Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA). The London red carpet premiere is slated to take place on the 15th October, and will be attended by the lead cast, crew and special guests. The BFI London screening is preceded by the world premiere taking place at the prestigious 41st Toronto International Film Festival® (TIFF) on the 11th September. This is the first Nollywood film to be chosen by both Toronto and London film festivals back to back and is a new milestone in African cinema. A story of love, honour and bullets set in Ibadan, Nigeria; the film is inspired by real life event in 1976 that led to the assassination ofnthe then Nigerian Head of State, Murtala Muhammed.

The film, cast and crew have now received a major boost with a high profile endorsement from the Head of State who succeeded the assassinated Murtala Muhammed at the time; His Excellency General Olusegun Obasanjo, then later went on to become a two term President making him both a military and civilian leader of the largest black nation in the world. He described '76 as, "the best view of one of the worst times in our nation’s history. A must watch and an insight that was long overdue. Watching the attention to detail and hearing my own voice in February 1976, brought out both sweet and sour memories as Murtala Muhammed was not only my boss, he was my friend. I cannot attest to what went on in the homes as we were focused on the field, but this film gives even I, an insight into that."

Set during the era of military assassinations and political unrest in Nigeria, the movie also had the full approval and endorsement of the Nigerian Army and the Murtala Muhammed family, and was shot inside the confines of a military base, another first in Nigeria's cinematic history.  It comes 40 years after the actual events, and follows four years of work by the multi award winning Director Izu Ojukwu and the production teams of Adonis Production and Princewill’s Trust, a brainchild of Prince Tonye Princewill and Adonijah Owiriwa who are the film’s executive producers. Africa Magic, a Multichoice subsidiary also signed on as partners.

“Our objective was to show audiences, amongst other things, what the wives of officers had to go through. Military coups were our legacy. In some ways, we are still trying to recover from this. Everyone sees and hears the perspective of the officers. But the woman’s story stays silent. We wanted to highlight the strength and the vulnerabilities of the typical African woman through the eyes of officers' wives. This is a filmmaker's small contribution to raising their volume." the Executive Producer Adonijah Owiriwa stated

The BFI London Film Festival’s 60th anniversary edition which will take place at venues across the UK capital are from 5-16 October 2016.  In an exciting development for the 60th edition of the LFF, it will also see the launch, with the BFI and LFF’s official Time Partner IWC Schaffhausen, of a significant new bursary award to support exceptional new and emerging UK filmmakers. The IWC Schaffhausen Filmmakers Bursary Award in association with the BFI is a £50,000 award to benefit an outstanding British writer, director, or writer/director whose first or second fiction feature film premieres at the BFI London Film Festival.

WhatsApp to start sharing user data with Facebook

After WhatsApp was bought by Facebook in 2014, users worried that the messaging app's strong stance on privacy might be compromised. Co-founder Jan Koum hoped to stem these fears, writing in a blog post at the time: "Respect for your privacy is coded into our DNA, and we built WhatsApp around the goal of knowing as little about you as possible." Today, though, the company is loosening some of its own restrictions, and has announced it will begin sharing a limited amount of user data — including individuals' phone numbers — with parent company Facebook.

WhatsApp says that sharing this information means Facebook can offer better friend suggestions by mapping users' social connections across the two services, and deliver more relevant ads on the social network. Additional analytics data from WhatsApp will also be shared to track usage metrics and fight spam.

The messaging app says it also wants to explore how businesses can use WhatsApp to contact customers. It gives the example of a bank warning a user about a potentially fraudulent transaction, or notifications from airlines about delayed flights, and says that in order to test the features it needs to update its privacy policy. Facebook has already been exploring these sorts of use-cases with Messenger, and WhatsApp suggested it would follow the same path earlier this year. WhatsApp says that users will be able to "manage these communications," and that this won't lead to third-party banner ads on the service.

Despite these assurances, WhatsApp's users are still likely to feel annoyed that the company is sharing information with Facebook. Part of the app's popularity has always come from its unobtrusive (and unprofitable) business model, which gives users an easy way to communicate without using their data to serve ads.

WhatsApp's commitment to user privacy has even brought it into conflict with law enforcement, with a Brazilian court temporarily banning the app in July for refusing to hand over messages (it argued it couldn't if it wanted to).

WhatsApp is keen to preempt criticism, and says that although it's changing its privacy policy, it continues to support end-to-end encryption. "Even as we coordinate more with Facebook in the months ahead, your encrypted messages stay private and no one else can read them," says the company in a blog post.

"Not WhatsApp, not Facebook, nor anyone else. We won’t post or share your WhatsApp number with others, including on Facebook, and we still won't sell, share, or give your phone number to advertisers."

Obasanjo Reflects on 1976 Coup, Says Everyone Thought It will End Nigeria ( Thisday Online)

Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, monday reflected on the 1976 coup, saying that Nigerians thought it would end the nation called Nigeria.

Obasanjo explained that the misconception stemmed from the fact that most of those involved in the coup were Christians and for killing the Head of State, who was a Muslim, were seen as a bad signal for Nigeria.

The former president who was a host in the cast and crew of the yet-to-be released film, ‘1976’ (‘76) at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, said there were misconceptions about the coup, which upturned the political situation at the that time.

According to Obasanjo, the killing of a Muslim on a Friday by a gang thought to be Christians, particularly when we remembered the first coup, which upturned the political situation gave a bad signal. Where what will amount to; where will it lead us to and where will it lead us out? These were what Nigerians had in mind.

While describing the film which abridged parts were shown as “a mixture of sweet and sorrow”, Obasanjo commended the team for the production.

He said: “It will make us to remind ourselves not to go back to the dark days, which put us in go-no-go situation.”

He added: “We can have more of this, as there are more national issues that can be portrayed. We are capable of the best and that is what this film has shown,” he said.
However, the Executive Producer of the film, Prince Tonye Princewill, said the cast and crew of ‘1976’ were on tour of the country to seek support and endorsement for the film, billed to premier in November.

“The youth of today need to have a sense of the past, hence the resolve to have the film 1976, which is simply called ‘76”, he said.

Princewill said the visit to Obasanjo was important, “considering his position at that time in the country. We deemed it fit to come and show him the film and curry his endorsement, which as you can see we have got,” he said.
